Evaluation Task 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents the social group of a popular girl. I have chosen the character, Chanel from my film and I have compared her characteristics to Regina George from the film Mean girls. I chose Regina George because I used the film Mean Girls for some of my research on the opening of films. From my research I could see that the two characters, Chanel and Regina had similar traits. To show this I used a research close up shot of Regina, this photo shows her personality. This photo connotes her attitude and her bitchy side. Therefore I wanted Chanel to try and portray this image and show her bitchy and bossy personality through a photo.

These two character's have very similar personality's and roles in the two different films. From my research on the film Mean Girls I saw that Regina was a bully and played nasty games with a geeky, shy girl called Kady. This took place inside and out of school, Kady threw a party and all hell broke lose. Obviously her parents found out and suddenly she'd turned from this sensible quiet girl, to a party animal. Chanel is very similar to Regina in the way that she bully's the geeky girl in my film, Holly to have a party so that Holly gets an invite to Chanel's 16th birthday party. Holly feels pressured by Chanel to be someone she isn't and she soon get's in trouble with her parents when she throws a party.

Chanel and Regina have very similar personalities, both bossy, controlling, confident, sassy attitudes and both care about the latest fashion trend. These types of characters in films are there to belittle geeky shy girls to make themselves feel better about themselves.

Evaluation Task 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

 9 Frames Analysis

Frame one:

This first frame is of the production logo, Oscar Productions. This is a very typical frame to see in an opening sequence of a film. This is also like my opening the first frame that is shown, this tells the audience who the company logo is. This company logo is important because most people relate the 20th Century and the MGM Lion companies with high end films that have been distrusted worldwide by well known companies such as Sony and Film 4.

Frame Two:

The second frame is an extreme close up of an iPhone receiving abusive messages from the mean girl in the film Chanel. This shot is frozen during the film so that the audience can read what the messages say.

Frame Three:

Frame three is mid shot, high angle of the main character Holly. This shot represents her being your stereotypical geeky girl, who is seen to be on her own. The reason for using this camera shot, expresses how lonely she is because no one else is around in the shot.

Frame Four:
Frame four is a high angle shot taken of one of the main characters, Chanel. This shot captures her glaring down at her mobile phone. This represents your stereotypical teenager because teenagers are commonly associated with always being on their mobile phones.

Evaluation - What went wrong during the planning?

What went wrong during the planning?
Characters:
When planning my characters, I wanted to have one main character called Holly. She would have a personality of a shy, lonely girl that had no friends at school. However when filming it was obvious to me that there needed to be another main character involved. I added in another character called Chanel. She had complete opposite characterises of Holly. This didn't change much of the original planning of my film but I believe it improved the story line and made my film much more interesting with a reverie involved.
Another reason as to why I wanted to have two main characters that had different personalities is because from researching my teen angst films I learnt that there is always a main characters that over powers and belittles another main character. I wanted to create this. For example this is demonstrated in Mean Girls, when the new girl Kady is bossed around and bullied by The 'it girl Regina. Likewise in High school musical, Gabrielle the innocent, intelligent girl is intimidated by the personality and behaviour of the popular girl Sharpay Evans.
Sharpay Evans: The popular girl of the school.                          Gabrielle: The shy, geeky girl.

Evaluation - What went wrong ?

What went wrong during filming?
During filming I soon came across some difficulties. The first problem was that we had changed the storyline from the original plan, this was because I realised it was going to be too difficult to film an atmosphere of a classroom. However I over came this problem very quickly, I had a new idea of introducing a new main character called Chanel. This new idea fitted well and worked well with the opening of my film.

Another problem we had during filming was that we had to re do a lot of sense because they either had background noise or weren't up to a good quality. However the finish product of re filming made the film a higher quality film. Therefore I think it was beneficial to my film opening to  have scenes re filmed and to have a more structured layout.

When editing the film I also came across the difficult task of understanding how to use the software Premier Pro. However after a basic lesson on showing me how to use the programme I soon figured out how to edit. But along the way there were some small problems. For example music that I wanted to incorporate into my film, couldn't just be downloaded from my phone or YouTube because that is illegal copyright. So to overcome this problem I had to use the school resources sounds and music, which wasn't what I had originally planned but it was better then not having any music.

Another recreation I had to make was to the company logo. I remade the company logo when I distributed my first draft the my target audience (my peers). They gave me useful feed back that my logo had no meaning behind it, which when explained to me I could see.
